EXTRAORDINARY WOMAN: SUSAN LANGDON

We are thrilled to profile the second in our Extraordinary Woman series, an interview with the fabulous Susan Langdon. The philosophy of Shay Lowe Jewellery is ‘Be Extraordinary’ and Susan is extraordinary in every way.

Susan is the Executive Director of the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) which is the world’s first fashion incubator of its kind. TFI is a non-profit organization that supports, nurtures, and promotes up-and-coming small business entrepreneurs in the fashion industry.

Susan is extremely well respected with a career that spans over 30 years in the industry. She has mentored and assisted in launching the careers of several top Canadian designers and has been honoured with several awards by her peers in the industry.

The philosophy of Shay Lowe Jewellery is, ‘Be Extraordinary’. What does being extraordinary mean to you, and who is the most extraordinary woman you know?

Being extraordinary means doing something that you do exceptionally well. Someone might be an extraordinary writer or singer or designer but it can also mean being extraordinarily kind or generous. The most extraordinary woman I know is my mother because she is an extraordinary survivor. She lost a child and husband under unimaginable circumstances, she had everything taken away from her when she and her family were forced into a prison camp because of their race and she has survived it all. Even more extraordinary is that my mother is not bitter or disillusioned; she has simply forgiven fate and has moved on with her life. She will be 93 this year.

Tell us about the TFI 25th Anniversary Gala coming up on May 3rd.

After twenty-five years, the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) has reached a celebratory milestone and we’re inviting everyone to join us at TFI25, our non-profit’s 25^th anniversary fundraising gala that will bring together 800 of Toronto’s most stylish at the Royal Ontario Museum on May 3^rd.  100% of ticket sale proceeds will benefit TFI, the world’s first fashion incubator and centre of fashion entrepreneurship. This is hugely important as we can’t rely on government funding to keep us afloat any longer. We hope everyone in the community, especially those who have benefited some way from TFI – retailers, contractors, fabric suppliers, designers – buys a ticket and supports our organization.  Tickets and information about TFI25 can be found at www.TFI25.com. You have several Shay Lowe Jewellery pieces. What do you love about the Shay Lowe Jewellery brand, and why?

I love the boldness of Shay’s pieces and the mix of rock and roll chains and metal with Swarovski crystals and pearls. It’s the ultimate dichotomy of rough and refined that really appeals to me.

What is your best advice about accessorizing with jewellery?

If you wear jewellery for it to be noticed, then my advice is to make it count. Wear one, large, gorgeous statement piece.
